On June 19, 2008, the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR) had its first Anti-Deportation Speak-Out of the summer in Washington Heights. At the Speak-Out, members of NMCIR demanded an end to deportations and the tearing apart of immigrant families. Specifically members:
(1) Demanded all Presidential Candidates speak out against injustices caused by deportations, and,
(2) Demanded the Passage of the Child Citizen Protection Act (CCPA) (legislation in Congress to save children from the trauma of having a parent deported).
Members of NMCIR also distributed information on the rights of a person who is at risk of, or facing, deportation to inform the community members of their rights. Also, members were covered in the New York City media and further got the message out. See video and read NY1 coverage .
Dominicans, one of the largest groups in Washington Heights, have been hit hard by deportation. Since 1996, over 35,000 Dominicans were deported back to the Dominican Republic according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Join with us to fight deportations now! For more information and to get involved please contact Sandy Plácido, 212-781-0355 ext. 311, splacido@nmcir.org.
